Iraq, Israel, Iran, US ...
There are certain things that confuse me.
Everyone except George Bush wants a "graceful exit" of US from Iraq. But once they exit what will be Iraq's state of affairs?
A massive ethnic cleansing (please read religious killings for clarity) is almost sure to follow. The things could be even worse if the mighty Sunni's and Shia's formally or explicitly form allainces with Iran, Syria, Hezbollah & Hamas on one side and Saudi, Jordan & may be Egypt on the other side.
On a related note, hasn't Mr Bush got nothing to tackle back home? Something like, Katrina or the elections? Or is the US so overcrowded that you are sending the youth to get killed in Iraq, like we Indians send them to Kashmir? Leave all that apart, do you atleast know that people haven't stopped laughing over the Vietnam fiasco yet.
Sarcasm apart, will the US withdrawal make things worse or will it be the same? Is there any chance of or good reason for the UN intereference? All I wish is that I see something concrete happening in my lifetime.

In your life time :)))
The Iraq study group has submitted its reccom to the American public an hour back. We can see what they are saying. Anyways, cut and run from US side is not an option. US is responsible for the mess and they'll have to address it. I think the options will be,
1. Gradual withdrawal as Iraqi forces take charge
2. Deploy more troops and use overwhelming force to curb the civil war
3. Divide Iraq into three separate autonomous dominions based on kurd, shia and Sunni regions
There is no easy option before the prez and Americans are mightily pissed off with GW for the mess he's created.
Comparison to Vietnam may be quite farfetched,as very less US troops have died in Iraq comapred to Vietnam.
the whole point is never fight a war for an abstract idea. like defeating communism or defeating terrorism.
But the other day I read in the Paul Krugman column in Hindu that the Iraqi study group is a big flop. He thinks all they say is that the UStroops "could" withdraw if they wish but nothing like they "should". He expect them to reiterate President Bush's point.
For the options you have suggested, first is taken as it is. But the second could lead to diabolical situatons. Leaving apart the minimal support Bush would be able to gather for the move, that might provoke the Shia group to retaliate. For the third, I guess that is how things are already there.
And Vietnam lasted nearly 10 yrs (with US involvement), so if they aren't able to do something in the near future, you never know ;)))))
but i think there is the political atmosphere in USA for bold decisions now. Bush is cornered and even his new defense sec says they are not gonna "win" this war. the Iraq study group recomms wont be anything dramatic - but the volatile atmosphere in DC + the new democratic majority demands a course correction, the US public too, its a near consensus if you feel the pulse - the report will just be a channel.
on the second option, you are underestimating the US Army :)...US army is the strongest thing in this world.its true despite its cruel hand. then you're right no one wud support such a move.
